Hi, I’m Julia, I’m 16 years old, and one of the Co-Founders of KidsRead2Kids. I’m here to walk you through one of my favorite activities from the KidsRead2Kids Book Club at Bloomfield Hills High School.

We founded KidsRead2Kids Book Club to take our mission one step further. We wanted to get our resources in the hands of kids in need, especially during such a lonely and isolating time. In our Pilot Run at BHHS, Reuben and I are the Founding Presidents!

KidsRead2Kids Book Club is in its first year and we hope to spread it to schools, libraries, and organizations across the world.

Recently, we held a COVID-safe Bear Hunt through Downtown Birmingham to bring joy to families and give back to local businesses. It was a city-wide scavenger hunt for our KidsRead2Kids Reading Bears!

Local businesses placed posters in their window along with a mystery clue and teddy bear for families to find. As a prize, participants received their own Bear Hunter’s License and a digital coupon book from selected stores.

To get our Book Club kids ready, we read the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. Our Book Club members are trained to interactively read, which means pausing to ask questions and making sure kids are engaged in the material.

Along with this book, we taught them how to make their own Bear-Noculars! Our Bear-Noculars are super easy to make, and a great way to become an official Bear Hunter.

We know your child will love this interactive activity that incorporates creativity and hands-on fun with rich learning. This event was a good opportunity for the kids to get creative, some had even said it was their favorite project so far. That being said, we would love for more kids to participate in this great project that takes interactive learning to a new level and makes listening to the book even more exciting.

Materials:

2 Toilet Paper Rolls

1 Paper Clip

1 Sheet of Cardstock Paper

1 Piece of Tape

1 Rubber Band

1 Ribbon

Instructions:

  1. Take the two toilet paper rolls and paper clip them together

  2. Fold the paper in half hot dog style

  3. Fold the endpaper two inches upward

  4. Set the rolls in the middle and wrap the folded part of the sheet around first then the other part on top tightly and tape it together

  5. Flip it over, so the taped part is on the bottom, and stretch the rubber band over one of the rolls and have it rest in the middle, creasing the paper

  6. Wrap the ribbon over it and tie
