Q: Thanks for joining us, Valerie! When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Ten years ago at a women’s conference, we were asked the question “What will you accomplish in 10 years?”  We weren’t given much time and asked to blurt out the first thing that came to mind.  We all simultaneously spoke our thought, and mine was to write a book.  The words that left my lips shocked me! I thought to myself, "I'm not a writer."

Q: From there, what inspired you to create the characters and the story?

My real-life precocious pet Milo who is barely 10 pounds, but thinks he’s competition for his brother, the chocolate lab.  I wanted to help children learn about countless outdoor activities, such as surfing, camping and rock-climbing.  The book is aimed at encouraging and inspiring children to spend more time outdoors and try out some of these adventures.

Q: As a new writer, what was your biggest struggle and what kept you motivated to continue?

My biggest struggle is overcoming my own fears of creating something and putting it out into the world.  The vulnerability of it overwhelms me from time to time.

Q: What skills make you a good author?

I have an art/illustration background which helped me create this book, but spending over ten years running a law firm gave me the skill to juggle all the moving parts that need to take place in order to have the book published.   Also, I struggled reading as a child so this book provides an extra bit of help for children struggling.

Q: What do you think makes a good story?

A story with relatable characters with a platform of positivity.  We need that in the world!

Q: I totally agree. What do you love most about storytelling?

To have the children relate to the story in a way that it encourages them and fosters self assurance.

Q: What lessons do you hope readers will take from your story?

In a world of computers and ever-present technology, this book may encourage children to get out and be active – Milo is shown doing snowboarding, scuba diving to ziplining and more.  It’s perfect for everything from group reading to bedtime stories, and fun for the whole family.

Q: What were your favorite books growing up?

The Junie B Jones series.

Q: What would you say to a child struggling to read?

I would tell them that I can relate to their struggle because It brings me back to a time when I, a child myself, struggled with learning how to read.

Q: What advice would you give to help a child become a better writer?

That everyone is different and develops at their own pace, but keep working at it and it will become easier.
