Question #1:

Dear KidsRead2Kids,

My child is in 3rd grade and has a lexile score of 220. She is severely struggling to read and even more so, struggling to keep up with her class. Please give me some tips and tricks so that I can help my girl become a better reader!

Hi Janis!

What a great question! One of the reasons we started KidsRead2Kids was to give children a safe place to learn how to improve their active listening skills while introducing them to the world of audio-books. Audio-books are a great way to help children become better readers. They can listen while reading along. Jacob uses audio-books all the time - whether he is listening to his textbooks or enjoying a fun book before bed.

We suggest high-interest low-level books. Literacy skills are known to improve when a child reads something they enjoy. If children are drawn to a story, they are more likely to stick with it. Encourage your daughter to follow her passions.

Try recommending books based on her current interests, whether that is science, sports, mystery or graphic novels. Reuben loves his comic books. Don’t worry if the book seems too difficult to read. She can always start with the audio-book.

Decodable chapter books are also a wonderful way of learning to read. These books are specifically designed to help new readers. Some great ones for young readers include Dog on the Log Books, Spire Decodable Readers, Primary Phonics and BOB Books.

We also have a few of the Simple Words Decodable chapter books on our website. These are great for grades 3-8.

We asked the International Dyslexia Association Oregon Branch and they shared their favorite assistive technology tools. Click HERE for their list!

The tools are divided into three sections: Apps & Software, Digital Books, Textbooks & Audio-Books, and Devices.

We are so honored to be included on their of recommended favorites.

Believe in your child’s abilities. It may take a little longer, but they will learn. The most important thing is to instill a love of reading. If your child has that, she will grow to be a lifelong learner.

Sincerely,

Carol and Alana
