YES! Dancing stimulates us emotionally and physically, while benefiting your mind and social abilities in the process. It’s a great way to connect with your emotions and release everything that is pent-up inside.

What are the benefits?

 Improves self-confidence

o  There’s no better way to feel better about yourself than feeling good on the dance floor! As you keep improving, your confidence will only go up.

 Reduces anxiety

o  Dancing can put you in a better mood, make you feel calm, and give you a better sense of control. Sometimes we need an escape from our lives, and getting your blood flowing while expressing yourself creatively is a great way to do that!

 Physical development

o  Dancing moves your entire body and involves a range of motion, coordination, and strength (more than most physical activities!).

 Emotional maturity

o  Dance lets you express your emotions and will help you become aware of yourself and others through creative movement.

 Social awareness

o  Dance focuses on social encounters, interactions, and cooperation. Through dancing, you will learn to communicate ideas to others, to work with a group, and to understand yourself in relation to others. Learning to work in a team is super important!

 Cognitive development

o  It also helps with problem solving skills by giving movement ideas that can be solved with movement responses. This teaches students how to function in and understand the world. It will teach you motivation, persistence, and how to work towards a goal.

 Academic improvement

o  Dance will also help you develop knowledge, skill, and literacy! Learning language and learning dance are actually connected.

 

How can this help me outside of dance class?

All of the skills you learn while dancing translate into real life situations. They will help you succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.

Once your ability to focus, to problem solve, and your reading skill improve, your days in school won’t seem as hard.

I know sometimes it can be hard to see the bright side when things get tough, which is why it is so important to have joy in your life, and a way to escape from stress when you need it.

 

How dance changed my world  

Everyone in my family dances. Some do it on a more intense level than others, but we all have learned to appreciate all of the real life lessons dance has taught us.

When I was younger, I was extremely shy. I refused to talk to anyone but my immediate family members, and I always felt anxious, scared, and had really bad self-esteem.

Starting dance lessons changed everything for me. It taught me how to be myself and to not care what others think. I learned to make friends, take instruction, use my memory, and most importantly, to never give up.

Nowadays, I love musical theater and cheerleading, which both involve performing in front of crowds. Even though at times I still get anxious and scared, I don't let negative comments or opinions get to me and I keep going no matter what.

I reach for the stars and I want every one of you to do the same. Be confident! You’ve got this! J
